ARTIST: Cable Ties

We asked Shauna Boyle, drummer of Melbourne’s most excellent Cable Ties to do our stupid Q&A and thankfully she said yes.
Their album is coming out May 26 and shows starting early June so get on the Cable Ties train immediately or you’ll be regretting your choices.

1. If you had to re-imagine your sound as a food, how would you describe it?
Going by what kind of foods are most likely to fuel and motivate our sound, it would definitely be some kind of fried potato substance covered with processed tomato condiment. Either that or something really spicy, because in our song ‘Say What You Mean’ Jenny screams ‘spit it out!!’ which I guess is an important PSA if something is just too damn spicy.

2. And as an animal?
Really this one is too hard. Most likely some kind of energetic dog. So I’m going to borrow from a previous media release in saying that our sound is like ‘a bored dog tied to a washing line – there’s a lot of thrashing going on but’s its getting nowhere in a hurry.’

3. And as a TV series character?
The first person that comes to mind is G.O.B. aka ‘Jobe’ Bluth from Arrested Development. Apart from screaming “TWO WEEKS!!” at each other every time an event is approaching, it might have something do with our weird band/family dynamics or our failed careers as magicians.

4. What’s one of your favourite musical moments? give us a youtube link and a precise point.
After the three of us all seeing Patti Smith recently on her last tour here, this moment live as well as recorded is particularly significant. In Patti’s version of ‘Gloria’ at 5:06 where the group vocals kick the reprise of the chorus back after a dynamic drop is a face melter every time. And of course every time you get punched with “ah-ah, make her mine.”

5. MINI MIX-TAPE
Make us a mini youtube mixtape!

6. THE GOOD SON GAME
Refer to this classic scene from “The Good Son”.
You have 2 great artists hanging over the edge of the cliff, and you have one hand hanging on to each of them. They’re both slipping. You need to let go of one artist to save the other, or lose them both. Time’s a-tickin’.
The one you drop will now only exist in your mind, you can never hear their songs again.

Who do you drop?
HOLE or BIKINI KILL
Hole. How could you drop Bikini Kill? Sorry Courtney, but I’m pretty sure Kathleen is always going to be a much stronger and important figure in our lives. Girls to the front!

ROXY MUSIC or TALKING HEADS
Roxy Music. Talking Heads have always been the more fascinating, ever-changing and influential band that pushed peoples ideas and broadened the mainstream. Any Tina Weymouth is one of the greatest bass players of all time, in my opinion.

CYNDI LAUPER or MADONNA
Madonna. The thought of never being allowed to listen to “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” ever again makes me really sad. Sorry Madonna, I always thought Cyndi was way cooler.

7. What’s in your musical pipeline this year?
Tour! After the album comes out (May 26th on Poison City Records) we have shows lined up for Ballarat, Castlemaine, Hobart, Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra. We are also playing as part of Poison City Weekender on September 16th at the Evelyn rooftop which apparently is sold out already! Very excited to be on the lineup with such incredible bands that we admire, such as Harmony and Mere Women. Then after that we’ll see what happens I guess!
